Emergency Contraception

Next Choice is emergency contraception that helps prevent pregnancy after birth control failure or unprotected sex.

Next Choice will not work if you are already pregnant.

Next Choice will not protect you from HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections.

If you are choosing this option we ask you to consider the following:

  • The pills should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse.
  • You will take one tablet now and a 2nd tablet in 12 hours.
  • Next Choice is  not 100% effective.
  • The risks from taking Next Choice are rare but potentially serious.
  • They may include stroke or death from blood clots.

If you chose Next Choice, you should call 9-911 or 413-458-5646 promptly for any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe chest pain or difficulty breathing
  • Severe headache
  • Blurred vision or loss of vision
  • Severe abdominal pain
  •  Unexplained leg pain

Nausea may occur when taking Next Choice.

Because emergency contraception affects the hormones in the lining of the uterus it would not be expected to prevent an ectopic or tubal pregnancy.
